Call for Nominations – IPCC Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS)
The IPCC Secretariat has issued a call for nominations of experts to contribute as Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors, and Review Editors to the preparation of the 2027 IPCC Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies, Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (Additional Guidance). The IPCC Focal Point for Italy provides information on how to submit nominations and how to register for the Open Hour Webinar scheduled for 27 November 2025, at 10:00 a.m. CET.
The Methodology Report will be developed under the Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI) and will provide updated guidance for estimating and reporting anthropogenic removals and storage of CO₂ and other greenhouse gases, reflecting the latest scientific and technological developments.
The outline of the report was approved during the Sixty-third Session of the IPCC (Lima, Peru, 27–30 October 2025) (Decision IPCC-LXIII-6, available here). The terms of reference for the production of this Methodology Report are contained in Annex 1 of that decision, and the table of contents in Annex 2.
Selected authors will be responsible for drafting and revising chapters based on expert and government review comments.
- Coordinating Lead Authors and Lead Authors will attend four Lead Author Meetings between 2026 and 2027 and may be invited to the IPCC Plenary Session in late 2027 for the Report’s adoption.
- Review Editors will participate in two author meetings (2026 and 2027).
- Contributing Authors are not normally required to attend meetings.
Expertise required
Nominations should indicate the chapter(s) and role(s) for which the candidate is proposed, and demonstrate relevant expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Direct air capture (DACCS)
- Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS)
- Enhanced weathering
- Geological storage
- Blue carbon approaches
- Industrial utilization
- Soil and biomass carbon accounting
- Inventory methodologies.
The Task Force Bureau (TFI Bureau) will select Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors, and Review Editors, ensuring a diversity of expertise, geographical and gender balance, and a mix of experienced and new authors.
