The IPCC has opened registration for experts to review the First Order Draft (FOD) of the Working Group I (WGI) contribution to the Seventh Assessment Report (AR7). The WGI contribution assesses the latest physical science basis of climate change, including observed and projected large-scale climate changes, climate processes and feedback, and regional climate information.

The expert review, the first of multiple review stages, is a core element of the IPCC assessment process, ensuring that the report provides a balanced, comprehensive, and policy-relevant assessment of the latest scientific understanding.

Expert review period

Review period: 10 August – 2 October 2026

Type of review: expert review only (the government and expert review of the Second Order Draft will follow at a later stage).

The purpose of the expert review is to help ensure the scientific quality, accuracy and completeness of the report. Reviews are expected to be objective, open and transparent, and to reflect a wide range of expertise and geographical representation.

Who can register as an Expert Reviewer

Experts with relevant scientific, technical or methodological expertise related to the topics covered by Working Group I are encouraged to register, including expertise on the physical basis of climate change, climate processes and feedback, and regional climate information.

During the review, experts are invited to comment on the accuracy, balance, clarity and comprehensiveness of the report. They may:

•     suggest improvements to the presentation of information, including figures and tables;
•     identify relevant scientific literature with full citations;
•     propose revisions to the text;
•     recommend ways to improve the clarity and conciseness of the text while preserving its scientific integrity.

Experts who provide comments on the First Order Draft will also be invited to review the Second Order Draft. All expert reviewers will be acknowledged in the published report.

Open Hour Webinar – Expert Review of the WGI Contribution to AR7

To facilitate participation and clarify all aspects of the expert review process, the IPCC Focal Point for Italy will host an online Open Hour webinar.

The webinar will be moderated by Anna Pirani, CMCC,  and will feature:

• Yona Silvi (WGI TSU Science Coordinator) 
• Davide Faranda (LA Chapter 3: Changes in regional climate and extremes, and their causes).

The session will provide an overview of the structure and scope of the WGI contribution to AR7, practical guidance on how to submit review comments, and clarifications on the role and expectations of Expert Reviewers.
